If you want to feel yourself at the end of the Earth, then in this case you must visit the lighthouse of Cabo Menor, which is located at the end of Sardinero beach. From this place there is a beautiful view. Currently, the lighthouse is not used for its intended purpose, now it houses a museum of the Spanish artist Edouard Sanz.

Famous sights in Santander are the Pereda Gardens and the Santander Bank building, located on one of the main streets of the city of Paseo de Pereda. The gardens are a small park that was created in honor of the famous Spanish writer José Maria de Pereda. There is also a monument erected in honor of the writer.

The Botin Arts Center is a modern cultural facility on Paseo de Pereda Boulevard, an art center designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. Fundacion Botin is a venue for exhibitions and festivals. The complex combines two buildings with total area 2,500 m² with rooftop terrace. Buildings rest on columns, as if they are floating above the bay.

Alley Pereda

Pereda Boulevard is the oldest city street. Houses on the Paseo de Pereda were not touched by the fire. It houses the palace of the Spanish Transatlantic Company and the neoclassical Bank of Santander (1875). The promenade bears the name of the writer, a local native of Pered Jose Maria - the author of the collection "Mountain Sketches". The alley stretches to the port of Puerto Chico; in the evenings, residents of the city and vacationers walk here.

Pered Gardens

On the site of the former shopping embankments are the Pered Gardens, a popular landscape park. Pine and palm trees grow here, flower beds are laid out, there is a pond, a fountain is installed, carousels work. A music pavilion was built where the municipal orchestra performs. In the middle of the green zone stands the monument to José de Perede: on a huge stone pedestal is the figure of the writer, below it there are relief scenes from his works.

Porticade Square

Almost opposite the gardens of Pereda is the Plaza Porticada, surrounded by 64 neoclassical arcades. She, like many other things in the city, was recreated after a terrible fire in 1941. Plaza Porticada is a center of attraction for tourists and locals, there are many cafes and shops, there is a monument to the hero of the liberation war against the Napoleonic troops Valarde.

The Museum of Modern Art and Art Nouveau of Cantabria (MAS) is located on Rubio Street, in the former library of 1908. Masterpieces of Spanish, Italian, Flemish painting of the 15th-18th centuries, works of contemporary Cantabrian artists are stored here. The MAS collection contains 800 paintings and 200 engravings, 300 sculptures, photographs, coins, medals, and fossil finds. The two lower floors often host temporary exhibitions.

Funicular and lookout Rio de la Pila

From the observation deck Mirador Rio de la Pila offers a wonderful view of the city and the bay of Santander. A free funicular, which operates from 6:00 to 12:00, delivers everyone to the very top. A bit of history

In the 1st century A.D. The Romans founded the port of Victoriae Iuliobrigensium on this land. The first records of the city of Santander date back to 1068. Since 1187, the city received a special status of "fueros" from Alfonso VIII. In 1497, the plague wiped out the inhabitants - only a quarter of the population remained.

To XIX century Santander flourished, but in 1893 disaster struck: the ship Cabo Machichaco, carrying dynamite, exploded in the port, the shock wave destroyed the streets. The dunes of Liencres are the most important dune complex in the north of Spain, covering an area of ​​195 hectares. On the territory of the park there are dunes themselves, a pine forest and two beaches: Playa de Canallave and Playa De Valdearenas. Here you can walk along the dunes, watch the birds or just admire the beautiful scenery. There are a couple of restaurants nearby and ample parking.

From Santander Sev Ballesteros airport you can take the S4 bus from ALSA to the city center. They run every 30 minutes, the first bus from the airport leaves at 06:40, the last at 23:00.
