Transport on Koh Chang

An asphalt road runs along the coast of the island, unfortunately this road does not ring the island, but breaks off in the south. The main tourist infrastructure is located in the west of Koh Chang, the traffic here is denser than in the east. On the western part of the island, public transport runs during the day - songteo (open minibuses), which turns into a taxi in the evening. Daytime fare between the nearest beaches is 50 baht per person. There are no metered taxis like in Bangkok on Koh Chang. If you see such a taxi, it means they are visitors from Bangkok 🙂

The main transport on Koh Chang is a bike, there are very few cars. The bike can be rented from 150 baht per day. As a deposit, you must leave either a passport or a copy of your passport and money (usually 2-3 thousand baht).

We rented a Honda Click 125 for 200 baht per day. You can find cheaper bikes on White Sand Beach

Gasoline is sold mainly in bottles - 35-40 baht for a 0.7 liter bottle. The only normal gas station is between the ferry and White Sand Beach, but they refuse to fill it for less than 100 baht!

On Koh Chang, gasoline was bought in bottles for 35-40 baht
Refueling between White Sand Beach and the ferry with adequate prices, but you can’t refuel for less than 100 baht

Since Koh Chang is a mountainous island and there are several dangerous sections of the road with steep serpentines, many people have a question to rent a bike on Koh Chang or not?

One of the dangerous sections of the road in front of the White Sand beach

There are two dangerous sections of the road in tourist places:

  • If you go from the ferry to the west, then at the entrance to (there is still an observation deck)
  • In front of the beach (before reaching the Siam Beach Resort)

The empty roads of Koh Chang
Almost empty roads on Koh Chang

The east coast of the island seemed to us an ideal place for learning to ride a bike: the road is good, there are no mountains, there are no people-cars-bikes either! That's where you need to train to drive a bike!

Ideal empty road in the east of the island

Hotels and long term homes in Koh Chang

Housing and hotels on Koh Chang are either bungalows or low 2-4 storey buildings. Fortunately, skyscrapers, like in or in, are forbidden to build on the island. All houses should be lower than palm trees 🙂

The Thai government is trying to turn the paradise quiet island of Koh Chang into a top resort with expensive luxury hotels, so lovers of a comfortable stay will find a large selection of luxury hotels on Koh Chang.

Thrifty travelers will also not be left homeless on Koh Chang. Bungalows can be found for 250 baht per day! A lot of inexpensive housing is located on White Sand Beach on the second line from the sea across the road, towards the jungle, as well as in the Lonely Beach village that we love so much.

On Koh Chang there is housing for every budget

Book a hotel in Koh Chang for:

The most rated and popular hotels in Koh Chang:

Most cheap guesthouses are not listed on booking sites!

Book accommodation for holidays and weekends in advance! A lot of Thais from the mainland come to rest on Koh Chang.

with accommodation on long term things are not going as well as on . Firstly, most of the island's land is given over to the construction of expensive hotel complexes, and secondly, local entrepreneurs still do not want Koh Chang to become the second Koh Samui, where many winterers and centenarians settled, because tourists spend much more money on vacation, than permanently resident freelancers, and they won’t bargain for a couple of dollars.

Attractions of Koh Chang and things to do on the island

There are not so many attractions on Koh Chang, mostly people come to the island for a relaxing beach holiday. One of the attractions of the island is just its beaches and almost untouched nature. What else to visit on Koh Chang:

waterfalls

temples

There are several small temples on Koh Chang. I wrote in detail about the temples of Koh Chang.

observation decks

There are several equipped viewing platforms on the island. The most official of them is on the mountain near Kai Bey. About the observation decks of Koh Chang in detail

Elephant ride

Come to Thailand and not ride elephants? It's almost about us 🙂 We only once rode an elephant near . The cost of riding elephants on Koh Chang is from 900 baht per person. There are several elephant farms on Koh Chang, one near the Klong Plu Waterfall and several along the main road.

Go kayaking

On the beach you can rent a kayak for 100 baht per hour and swim to the neighboring islands. Four small islands are located opposite the southern part of Kai Bay beach. You can also kayak through the mangroves in the east of the island.

Kayaks for rent at Kai Bay Beach - 100 baht per hour, 400 baht for half a day

Visit a fishing village

Go sightseeing in Cambodia

Koh Chang is located near the border with Cambodia, you can go on an excursion to the famous. Highly recommend!

Nightlife on the island

The nightlife of the island is concentrated in two places: on White Sand beach and in the village of Lonely Beach. There are several nightclubs on White Sand Beach, there are also bars where you can rent a taek, but everything, of course, is much quieter and calmer than in Pattaya or Phuket.

On Lonely Beach, parties are often held on the beach, where they dance until the morning. The audience is mostly young foreigners, backpackers, hippies, etc. There are also a lot of nice bars on Lonely Beach where you can sit, drink cocktails, chat and listen to live music.

Bar Siam Hut - they hang out here until the morning, and every Friday there is a beach party

A fire show is held on White Sand Beach. We loved to watch the fire show on and on, this time we didn’t catch Lonli Beach.

Koh Chang island we loved it, it's perfect for a beach holiday. I don’t understand why everyone is obsessed with Koh Samui? The beaches on Koh Chang are no worse, and some are even better than, the landscapes are beautiful, the jungle is untouched, there is housing for every taste and budget.

Yes, the infrastructure on Koh Chang is not as well developed as on Koh Samui, but maybe this is the beauty of the island, maybe it’s worth hurrying up and visiting Koh Chang before it becomes the second Koh Samui? After all, in 2005 I saw Koh Samui completely different, not as hectic and Russian-speaking as it is now.

Is Koh Chang suitable for a beach holiday? - definitely yes

Is Koh Chang suitable for families with children? – yes, especially Klong Prao and Chai Chet beaches

Is K Chang suitable for wintering? - Yes, but if only for a period of 1-2 months. It seems to me that in 2 months it will become boring there. And everything is not clear with shops, you need to look for a cheap local market 🙂

If you decide to go on your own, that is, to fully plan your vacation on the island of Koh Chang exactly as you want it, and not as tour operators do it for you, then in any case you will need to get to the island, book accommodation in a hotel or a private house and organize your leisure time. In these and many other issues, you can be helped by local Russian guys who have been living and working on the island since 2010 Satang.ru.

It is often cheaper to buy tickets for excursions and minibuses on Koh Chang already on the spot, without booking seats in advance, as in high season from October to April they take place daily and there are always free places. Their prices are the same as in other tourist shops on the island, but at the same time you get a service in Russian, and at any time you need. If you need to take care of renting a private house or villa for several weeks or months in advance, which is not available anywhere on the Internet, then they will also help you!

Igor and Ekaterina will not only answer any of your questions about the island for free, but also give advice: where to eat, where to go for a massage, how to see the island on a budget and on your own, answer all those small, but important questions, which are usually so reluctant to meet guides in hotels, and in the case of Satang.ru, you just need to call them on the phone!

The Satang.ru office is located at the very beginning of Klong Prao beach, near Chaichet Bay, opposite the Paradise resort, Chaichet resort and Coconut beach resort, so if you are located somewhere nearby, be sure to stop by to say hello 🙂

Friends, now you know almost everything about Koh Chang. Share articles on social networks with your friends, maybe someone will also discover the paradise island of Koh Chang for themselves 🙂

For a warm climate all year round which allows you to relax at any time of the year. The island is one of the most popular "non-urban" holiday destinations in Thailand. And here is everything that the tropics can offer - warm sea, sun, beautiful landscapes and fresh air. But in order to relax on 5+, you need to choose the right time and not get caught in the rain.

Most best time for a trip to Koh Chang - this is December, January and February, when precipitation is almost zero. In the remaining months, you can also relax, but there are some nuances, which we will discuss below.

January weather

The weather on Koh Chang in January is one of the best. Firstly, this is one of the coldest months by tropical standards, daytime temperatures are +28, nighttime temperatures are +23. Water temperature +27. And it's even better on the coast, as the wind blows pleasantly. The amount of precipitation is 10.5 mm, which in normal language means an hour of rain once a month. There are no waves perfect time for holidays with children. True, this is the peak tourist season and hotels should be booked in advance.

Weather in February

This month is similar to January. The weather on Koh Chang in February is just as clear and cool by local standards. Rain can fall only a couple of times a month, which will not interfere with enjoying a beach and sightseeing holiday.

March weather

The beginning of March is like February. But in the second half of the month, the temperature begins to increase and can already reach +33. However, there is still little rainfall, the weather in March on Koh Chang is quite suitable for a comfortable stay. Water warms up to +29. The only trouble is the possible lack of water in the waterfalls, as the dry season is in full swing and there has been no rain for a very long time.

April weather

This month is more suitable for a "vegetable" holiday on the coast, and not for excursions. The weather in April on Koh Chang is the hottest of the year, it can be +35 during the day, and +26 at night. Only in close proximity a refreshing breeze blows from the sea, but as soon as you move only 80-100 meters, a real bath begins. It's pretty hot to ride around or look around. Precipitation - short-term rain once a week, and it can only be at night or in the evening.

The only plus of this month is the opportunity to see how the Thai New Year is celebrated - from April 13 to 15. At this time, you do not have to worry about heat stroke, as cold water is poured everywhere.

The water temperature in the sea is +29, there are no waves.

May weather

Another hot month. The weather on Koh Chang in May is changeable, there is more and more rainfall, a couple of times a week for sure. But on the other hand, they cool the air and the declared +34 feel like +30. But at the end of the month, a full-fledged rainy season begins, but with luck, most of the precipitation will fall at night.

However, until about May 20, Koh Chang is worth going to for those who want to save money on a beach holiday. and hotel stays are already reduced, and the weather is not badly spoiled by rains.

June weather

The rainy season is in full swing. The weather in June on Koh Chang is quite rainy. The amount of precipitation is 429.5 mm, which is 40 times more than in January. But as we have said more than once, all tropical rains are very intense and a heavy downpour can “run out of steam” in an hour or two. The air temperature is slightly lower than in May - +32 during the day, 5-7 degrees lower at night. Water temperature +28. When it rains, there may be winds that make the waves high.

There are few vacationers on the island of Koh Chang, hotels and guesthouses are lowering prices for accommodation, which will please budget tourists. From June until the end of the year, you can be sure to enjoy the waterfalls, which until then were almost dry.

July weather

July and August are the rainiest months of the year. Because of them, increased humidity is created, which is not very well tolerated by many. The weather in July on Koh Chang is +32 during the day and +25 at night. The water temperature in the sea is +28, there are often waves. It is better to choose other resorts at this time, for example, Pattaya, Koh Samui and Samet, where there is not much rainfall. But only those who want to save on accommodation and lie on half-empty beaches (some will be completely empty) can come here this month.

August weather

The weather in August on Koh Chang is almost the same as in July. This month is not favorable for the beach and sightseeing vacation on the island.

September weather

In September, there is as much rain as in August, but the air temperature is slightly lower - +31 during the day, +26 at night. The water temperature in the sea is +28. The weather in September on Koh Chang is changeable, sometimes wet and windy, sometimes dry and calm sea. But when the rain stops, you can relax on the coast almost all alone or go to full-flowing waterfalls, which this month are in the juice itself. Prices are still low - both for food and accommodation - as everyone is fighting for customers.

October weather

October - last month the rainy season, reminiscent of its beginning - May. True, the weather is generally better, because with an equal amount of precipitation, the temperature is lower by 3-4 degrees. During the day - about +31 degrees, and at night - +25. Plus, the nature saturated with moisture pleases with a riot of greenery. The waterfalls are full.

By the end of the month, the amount of precipitation noticeably decreases and the flow of tourists increases. The weather on Koh Chang in October is generally suitable for beach holidays and excursions, especially towards the end of the month.

November weather

The rainy season is over. The weather in November on Koh Chang is sunny, there is usually only a couple in a month cloudy days. The thermometer goes down, until the end of the month the air temperature during the day does not exceed +30 degrees. Water temperature - +28. The sea is calm and enticing with its coolness. A great time to relax on Koh Chang with the whole family.

Koh Chang is the second largest island in Thailand and the largest island in the eastern part of the country, administratively belonging to the province of Trat. Only 5,000 people live permanently on the island, but with the development of tourism, everyone comes here every year more people.

General information

With long sandy beaches, Koh Chang is considered one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. In addition, it is a habitat for a variety of representatives wildlife: birds, snakes, varieties of deer and elephants. The island itself and the surrounding areas are a great place for swimming, diving and hiking through the jungle.

Since the island became a popular tourist destination since 2000, a lot has changed. Although life here is still much more measured than in Phuket or Phuket, peace and quiet at the height of the season can only be dreamed of here. As for the prices for services intended for tourists, they are so overpriced that they cannot be compared with the prices for the same services on other islands.

How to get there

Want to know how to get to Koh Chang? Below is a list of vehicles with which you can do this.

By plane

Bangkok Airways operates 3 flights daily from Suvannabum New International Airport (Bangkok) to Trat Province. Departure times: 08:30, 11:40 and 17:05. The flight takes 1 hour. Round trip tickets cost between 3,200 and 3,800 baht. You can see how much tickets for your dates will cost.

Transfer from Trat airport to Koh Chang including ferry price is 500 baht per person. A round trip ticket costs 900 baht. Transfer minibuses are air conditioned.

If you take a free shuttle right outside the arrivals hall of Suwannaphum International Airport to the airport bus station, you can get to Trat or Chanthaburi by bus from there.

Taxi rental

From the center of Bangkok to Suvannapum International Airport can be reached by taxi or limousine in five to five and a half hours. Most taxi drivers will refuse to take you to the airport because there is a high probability that they will go back without a passenger, and therefore without profit. Most of the limousines and minibuses waiting for passengers at the airport will take you to your hotel or resort in Koh Chang. They will certainly agree if they manage to return to the mainland on the same day.

By bus

The cheapest way to get from Bangkok to Laem Ngop, Trat Province, where ferries depart for Koh Chang, is to take bus number 999 from Bangkok's Ekamai East Station. It delivers passengers directly to the pier from which the ferry leaves. A ticket costs 275 baht one way (520 baht round trip). The transfer takes only 5 hours. The buses are equipped with a high-quality ventilation system, and each tourist receives a set of drinks and snacks upon boarding. Unfortunately, the number of flights is limited to two morning departures. Departure time from Ekamay: 07:45, 09:45. The bus from Laem Ngop arrives at 14:00. Buses can be taken from Suwannapum Airport and Chanthaburi Province, subject to availability.

In December 2009, a new bus route No. 392 began operating from Suvannapum Airport to Koh Chang. To get there, you need to take a shuttle that goes to the bus station at the airport. The bus leaves from there at 07:30, and the return flight from Koh Chang arrives at 12:30. Tickets can be ordered on the website of the bus company Suvarnabhumi Burapha.

From November 1, 2010, express buses and minibuses run on the route of Suvannapum Airport - Lonely Beach, Koh Chang. A bus ticket costs 308 baht, and an express minibus ticket to Lonli Beach costs 600 baht (800 baht round trip). Ferry crossing is included in the price. However, traveling by minibus can be dangerous: they are often overcrowded, luggage cannot be secured securely, and drivers routinely break the rules. traffic. Moreover, there is no absolute certainty that you will also be able to get back by minibus, perhaps due to the lack of places you will have to transfer to a full-fledged bus carrying people from other places and making long stops along the way.

Alternative option it can be a trip by bus of the first (journey duration - about 5 hours, cost - 250 baht) or second class, departing from both the Ekamai East Bus Station and the Mo Chit North Station and operating direct flights to the provincial capital of Trat . From there, you can get to the Laem Ngop area on numerous songthaews (the trip will take about half an hour and will cost 50 baht per person).

There are more buses from Ekamai Station than from Mo Chit. Bus number 511, equipped with air conditioning, can be a good choice for those who need to move from Bangkok South Station Sai Tai (Sai Tai Mai) to East (Ekamai).

Second-class buses from Cherdchai Private Bus depart from Ekamai Station. The fare to the province of Trat for March 2015 is 255 baht. Buses depart every 2 hours, the carrier company promises to deliver its passengers to Trat in 4 hours.

Cherdchai Private Bus also offers travelers first-class night buses equipped with good air conditioning. Departure time from the Ekamay bus station is 23:30, and arrival in the city of Trat is 05:00. But it’s better not to use them, since they are most often overcrowded, the air conditioners do not work in them, the toilet stinks, and the bus itself is, to put it mildly, dirty.

Also, if, when buying a bus ticket, you immediately pay for the ferry fare (the prices for it are always very high) at the Cherdchai ticket office to Ekamai, then you should pay attention to which pier it will be from: from the Centrepoint pier, located 45 minutes drive from the city or Ao Thammachart - 25.

You will also need a transfer in Trat if you go to the island from Pattaya (by second-class bus for 200 baht, the journey takes about 4 hours).

From Pattaya (Ban Phe), from the main street of Khaosan (Bangkok) and from the Victory Monument (located in front of the Phayathai Hospital, Bangkok), minibuses leave for Laem Ngop. However, they are not as comfortable and spacious as those described above and, oddly enough, tickets here can be much more expensive. Such illogical phenomena are quite common in the tourism industry in Thailand.

There is another option, which, however, depends on many factors, including the time of year and day, and local help: Laem Ngop can be reached by bus from the village of Hat Lek (Hat Lek) (), which is located on the border with the province Kohkong(). You can get from here to the Trat bus station for 120 baht.

By ferry

Most ferries to Koh Chang leave from Laem Ngop Pier (Laem Ngop or Tha Khrom Luang, or Tha Laern Ngop), which is located about 700 meters west of the center of Laem Ngop. Centrepoint Pier is located 3.5 km from the center of Laem Ngop. Both passenger and car ferries depart from both of these marinas.

The transport ferry to Koh Chang departs from the pier in Thammachat Bay - Ao Thammachat, located 15 km west of Laem Ngop.

All marinas of the island of Koh Chang, including the largest of them - Tha Dan Kao and Tha Ferry Dan Kao, which receive the most transport and passengers, are located on the eastern coast of the island.

The ferry from Laem Ngop sails to Dan Kao in about 45 minutes. The car ferry docks at Ferry Dan Kao, which is located 400 meters southwest of Dan Kao, travel time is 1 hour.

A car ferry from Ao Thammachat docks at Tha Ferry Ko Chang, located in Ao Sapparot Bay, 3 km northwest of Dan Kao piers.

There are also 2 operators that offer ferry services from Koh Kood to Koh Chang. The office of one of them is located on the beach of Binbao (Ban Bao), and the other - on the beach of Kai Bae (Kai Bae), Koh Kood. Prices are about the same, but departure times may vary, it is better to book in advance.

On ferries, car ferries and marinas, passengers are offered a variety of dishes, fruits and drinks.

The climate here is the same as in Bangkok. In the city of Koh Chang, the season falls on the period from November to February - a rather cool time. In March-May, the weather is sultry on the island, and from June to October they go heavy rains: an average of 4,000 mm of precipitation falls per year. Many hotels are closed during this period, so it is difficult to find a place to stay at this time. You can pick up tours to Koh Chang from Russia, for example.

Geography

Koh Chang is the largest island in the Koh Chang archipelago. The name translates as "Elephant Island" due to the shape of the cape, reminiscent of an elephant. However, it should be noted that the island is not a natural habitat for these animals.

The area of Koh Chang is about 429 km2. The highest point of the island - Mount Salakkhet rises to 744 meters above sea level. Its slopes are covered with moist, evergreen forests, which are the main source of fresh water on the island. In addition, there are many fairly high mountains and cliffs.

70% of the island is untouched rainforests, steep hills, high mountains, rocks, waterfalls, beautiful beaches and coral reefs. It also has a rich flora and fauna both on land and in the sea.

Most of the hotels are located in the western part of the island, because it is here that the magnificent, comfortable, beautiful sandy beaches are located. There are none in the east. However, the east is also worth a visit - in order to see several waterfalls and other Beautiful places.

I prefer to look for hotels on, but you can check if there is a better price anywhere. If you prefer to rent accommodation from the locals, you can see the options.
