Right after Olympic Games Alexei Ulanov married in 1972 ( Olympic champion, Rodnina's first partner. - Ed.). I don’t know how in St. Petersburg they were able to paint with Luda (Smirnova, a famous figure skater, bronze medalist of the Olympics. - Ed.), he was a Muscovite by registration.

At the World Championships in Calgary, that is, a couple of months after the Olympics, there really was a difficult situation. Zhuk (the first coach of Rodnina. - Ed.) Just couldn’t see him, and I quietly “rolled” with him. Ulanov did not want to listen to Zhuk, Stas spoke to him through his teeth, so Piseev (the former head of the Figure Skating Federation. - Ed.) was always with us ...

This is me to the fact that Beetle somewhere expressed the opinion that the injury that happened to me in Calgary was not accidental. It was as if Ulanov had thrown me on the ice on purpose in order to give his wife such a gift - to give her the opportunity to win the World Championship. I do not believe. And I will never believe it. But people took it that way. In general, in the eyes of the Soviet people, I was an abandoned, moreover, still painfully hit girl. Now, many years later, we have a very good relationship. We are always glad to meet you. And then ... everything happened. We were preparing for a festival of youth and students in the GDR... Ice was nowhere to be found in Moscow in the summer, and we trained for several days in Voskresensk. The house... was undergoing renovations, the plumbing and heating pipes were being changed. And there were holes between all the rooms. Therefore, everything that happened in the lower and upper rooms was audible. And Lelik is talking there: “I changed my medals for a bed with you.” And Luda sniffs something in response. Later in training I say: “Lyuda, are you crazy? - We really treated each other normally. What are you letting him do! Pack your bags and get away from this jerk." He told me: “What are you teaching my partner?” I told him: "I'm teaching her how to treat you, a fool."

Four people in a room. There was no money to pay for the ice, and for the first two days we just walked around. We sit in the hall all in tears and snot, the film goes on Italian with English subtitles. We leave, and Stasik, who was a little tipsy, says: “What a cool story. But why did they come up with such a bad ending? I, without understanding, tell him: “Stanislav Alekseevich, this is Shakespeare.” And I myself wipe my tears, I sniffle with my nose. Until that evening, I believed him completely unconditionally, believed everything, no matter what he said, no matter what he did, carried out all his instructions. Once he told me: "Hands are weak." Me: “No, I do all the tasks.” Beetle: “I woke up in the morning, fell to the floor and did twenty push-ups.” And I really fell off the bed on the floor and did push-ups. Further: "The ankle is weak." He continued to celebrate: day, second, third. Anna Ilyinichna makes a decision: to take Zhuk's clothes away. We have a training session at the main rink late in the evening. We ride with Ulanov slowly, quietly. And suddenly we see how in the dark, because the skating rink was half-lit, a square Stanislav Alekseevich appears in the clothes of thin Slava Zhigalin. We are getting hysterical. Then Anna Ilyinichna saw Zhuk and literally shooed him out of the arena. In pursuit, she also told him: do not come to training in this form!

The next day we have an early morning rollout. It's hard to talk about it, but for the first time I saw that he can drink to such an extent. When his daughter was born, or rather, only he took Nina to the hospital, he immediately ran to training. And he left a friend in the hospital to expect the result. Then a friend came, said that a girl was born, brought a bottle of champagne, which they drank. Previously, the draw for the short program was held in the general crowd. And then, according to the results of the short program, we were divided into two groups: the strongest and the weakest. The weakest have already "foaled" themselves. It so happened that for several years we opened a group of the strongest. We performed first, and then watched what happens next. That's why I remember any competition well. Before Protopopov's exit, a lamp over the ice bursts with a roar. Hot glass shatters and digs into the ice. Workers come out, clean the arena, then the car drives, cleans the ice. The competition was delayed by five to seven minutes. Belousova and Protopopov came out. They skated about half the program very decently, and then something terrible began. They barely move. Maybe they suffocated, or maybe something else happened, but they barely made it to the end.

By the way, Ulanov and I also had difficulty finishing it, but for a different reason. My Achilles, torn back in the sixty-eighth year, in the middle of the program, when I jumped a sheepskin coat, crunched, and literally nothing was left of my left leg - I just lost it.

We managed not to stop, finished the program. However, on their last legs, everyone rode there. The skating rink in Colorado was built very quickly, within almost two weeks, because they were waiting for the arrival of the national team Soviet Union hockey. The rink is very small. When you ride, these pipes are visible. And when you get off the ice, there is a narrow corridor at the end. Men's locker room to the right, women's locker room to the left. During the free program, on one side of the corridor, there were two black people, like doormen, in gloves, with a stretcher, and the same two on the other side. When the couples left the ice, they waited for the assessments, then took two or three steps towards the dressing room and realized that they no longer controlled their movements. And they dumped you on it. After a while, we were on it and came to our senses. Young people are faster, but Belousova was very ill for a long time. Our doctor sat next to her all night. We were not checked then, and it seems to me that they were taking some kind of drugs. This probably played a role, because often the effect of stimulants is designed for only a short period of time, and during the second part the drug's effect began to reverse.
