Lambert pine cone. The biggest bump in the world. Significance and application

Lambert Pine Cone

The largest cone is that of the Pinus lambertiana pine (a type of evergreen tree in the genus Pine of the Pine family), also known as Sugar Pine (sugar pine) or Lambert pine. The length of the cones of this tree can reach ~60 cm, and the seeds up to 12 mm. This pine grows in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada in the states of Oregon, Nevada and California, the western part North America and northern Mexico, vivo.

This large tree usually grows up to 70 m in height (in rare cases up to 81 m), and its diameter is from 1.2 to 1.8 m. The needles are grayish-green in color and slightly twisted at the ends, their length is 12 cm.

The tree was named Lambert's pine in honor of Aylmer Burke Lambert, an English botanist, researcher and expert on the species of the genus Pine, the author of the names of a number of botanical taxa. And the Sugar Pine was named because of the high sugar content in the resin. Seeds, like those of the cones of the Cedar tree, are suitable for human consumption.

It is noteworthy that in England there is a memorial plaque to the sugar pine cone: "The largest cone in the world in full size."

Pine cone Araucaria

In first place among the biggest cones of the planet the cone of the Araucaria Bidwill pine, also known as the Bunia pine (Araucaria bidwillii, a species of evergreen coniferous trees from the genus Araucaria of the Araucariaceae family).

This evergreen tree grows up to 50 m in height, 125 cm in diameter. Its leaves are oval, pointed, reach a length of 2.5-7.5 cm, and a width of 1.2-1.5 cm. Bidvilla's araucaria is a dioecious plant , and the cones of the female individual grow much larger than the male ones, have a spherical-ovoid shape, with a thick axis. The dimensions of the cones are impressive in their size: they can reach 35 cm in diameter and weigh up to 3 kg.

Danger for tourists

In Australia, in the city of Warragul, a pine grows, which, according to the local population, is 120 years old. Its height is 50 m, and the cones on it grow up to 10 kg in weight. The local administration warns tourists about possible injuries from the cones of this tree and advises to stand at a safe distance from it.

Pinus lambertiana

Lambert pine (Canadian sugar pine, sugar pine, Oregon yellow pine) - a huge tree; the most gigantic of all pines, reaching from 50 to 100 m in height and from 3 to 6 m in diameter, with light brown smooth bark, cracking into small patches with age. Life expectancy averages 600-700 years, maximum - up to 900. The trunk is immaculately straight, highly branching. The branches are whorled, horizontal, slightly hanging, forming an ovoid crown.

Young shoots are chocolate in color. Needles in a bunch five; they are rigid, acutely triangular, cutting along the edges, pointed, bright green, with bluish longitudinal lines, more clearly visible on young needles. Needles from 9 to 11 cm long. The cones hang on cylindrical light orange legs, reaching 30 to 50 cm in length and 8 to 11 cm in thickness.

The scales of the cone are leathery, wedge-shaped, flattened; scutellum slightly thickened, dorsally convex, smooth, with hard margins, and with wide, strongly blunted carina. The nut-like seed is large, smooth, black, oblong-ovoid; 15 mm long and 9-10 mm wide, with not completely forked, long, brown, oblong blunt wing. Cotyledons from 13 to 15. The weight of the nut is 5-10% less than that of the Siberian pine.

This pine grows in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada in the states of Oregon, Nevada and California, western North America and Northern Mexico, in natural conditions.

Named after the English botanist Aylmer Bourke Lambert, a researcher and expert on species of the genus Pine. It is noteworthy that in England there is a memorial plaque to the sugar pine cone: "The largest cone in the world in full size."

Unpretentious in relation to the soil, but especially loves loose, sandy, fresh clay soil. It can endure a short-term drop in temperature to -33 C. Propagated by roots, seeds, cuttings. It grows very slowly, especially in youth, which is observed even in its homeland, and only the oldest trees have rapid growth.

He suffers greatly and even dies from hard soil; top scores are possible only under particularly favorable conditions, namely, when this pine is grown in soils corresponding to those in which it grows wild, or in countries with a milder climate. Currently, the greatest danger to sugar pine is blister rust, which infects seedlings and kills them.

Seeds, like those of the cones of the Cedar tree, are suitable for human consumption. The seed is edible, sweet in taste, readily collected by the inhabitants. The liquid obtained from the dry distillation of this wood does not have the qualities of resin characteristic of the juice of a living tree; She gets sweet taste, similar to sugar or manna, instead of which it is sometimes used; it is also recommended as a cough remedy. This explains the name: "sugar pine". Resin tastes even better than sugar maple, and because of its laxative properties, you won't eat much of it.

The Indians gnaw on its seeds at their leisure. If they collect a lot, they grind it into flour and bake cakes. If the trunk burns during a fire, then a sweet, sugary syrup flows from it. Indians use it instead of sugar. It solidifies on the bark in hard pieces, like rosin.

Thunberg pine - pinus thunbergii - Japanese black pine - Asian pine - Brocade pine- one of the symbols of bonsai. Not many trees can convey the beauty and subtlety of the art of bonsai, as Pinus Thunbergii does. It will look no less decorative in the garden.

The Japanese pine is an evergreen coniferous graceful tree of the Pine family. Belongs to the number of rare tree species in Russia.
This beautiful tree has deeply furrowed bark, which becomes coarser with age and becomes extremely expressive. The needles are lush, long, thick green. Thunberg pine in nature can reach a height of 30 meters, and a trunk diameter of up to 70-80 cm.
On the Far East In Russia, this type of pine is found only in the Primorsky Territory.
It grows on dry rocky slopes, cliffs, on rocks.

Location: likes sunny places, but also calmly tolerates light shading. It is recommended to place it on an elevation so that the lower branches receive a sufficient amount of light. Always choose a well-heated place for better growth tree. The only exception is excessively damp and closed areas with poor air ventilation, especially during the rainy and frost season, since such conditions are difficult for the roots. Can winter on the street, but it is necessary to protect the plant from excess moisture.
Watering: should be moderate. Do not allow excessive waterlogging. It tolerates drought much better than too wet soil. You can do without spraying water from a spray bottle even in summer, because pines tolerate hot and dry environments well.

Reproduction: propagated by seeds. It is difficult to form plants taken from nature, since the pine has a strong tap root, which is difficult to remove without sufficient experience. It is safer to purchase a young plant in a nursery or grow from seed.

The cost of Thunberg pine seeds - 200 rubles / 20 pieces, 400 rubles / 60 pieces, 800 rubles / 150 pieces

Wallich pine seeds (pinus wallichiana, bhutan pine, pinus excelsa, pinus griffithii)

Wallich pine - wallichiana - pinus wallichiana - bhutan pine- the species is named after the English and Danish surgeon and botanist Nathaniel Wallich. It was brought to Europe in 1823 by the English botanist E. B. Lambert. In nature, it grows in the Himalayas, on the Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain systems, from the eastern part of Afghanistan to the Yunnan province in China, at an altitude of 1800-4300 m above sea level. In nature, it forms extensive forests with Himalayan spruce and Himalayan cedar. Lives up to 300 years.

Medium high (30-50 m) fast growing tree 8-20 m wide. Annual growth is 35-60 cm in height and 15-20 cm in width. The root system is powerful, flat-prostrate. The crown is openwork, loose, wide-pyramidal in shape, the branches are horizontal, sprawling, in nature they grow to the ground. The bark at a young age is smooth, dark gray, later becomes dark ash-gray, fissured, with peeling plates. Young branches are shiny, glabrous, yellowish green.

The needles are collected in bunches of 5 pieces, thin, long (15-18 cm), width 0.75 mm, vertically standing on young shoots, hanging down on older shoots, sharp, bluish-green (gray), with white stomatal lines on the inside, the edges are softly sawn. It remains on the tree for 3-4 years.

Grows on all cultivated soils, even sandy ones. Prefers moderately moist, fertile, well-drained, acidic to neutral soils. Photophilous, but does not tolerate direct rays. Dislikes drought and heat. When kept indoors, it needs a cool wintering.

Planting: planting hole depth - 0.8-1 m. The distance between plants is at least 4 m. On heavy soils with excess moisture, it is recommended to make a drainage 20 cm thick. Soil mixture: sand, peat and topsoil in a ratio of 2: 1: 1 - for planting in soil with a neutral reaction. For acidic soils, 200-300 g of lime is applied to the pit. Superphosphate 150 g / pit is added to the planting mixture, in the fall - phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

Care: in the second year after planting, it is necessary to apply complex fertilizer, and in the 2nd half of summer - phosphorus-potassium fertilizers 40-50 g per 10 liters of water.

When forming pruning, it is recommended to remove no more than 1/3 of the green mass. To increase the density of the crown, the removal of a third of the growth is used. current year while maintaining the shape of the crown. You can not leave bare branches without needles. Pruning is recommended from early spring to late autumn.

It looks impressive in group plantings in parks, on alleys, it is also beautiful in single plantings in open places. It stands out in contrast against the background of other trees with dark foliage or needles: common spruce, evergreen cypress, large-flowered magnolia, horse chestnut. Can be used to create bonsai.

The cost of Wallich pine seeds - 200 rubles / 10 pieces, 400 rubles / 30 pieces, 800 rubles / 80 pieces

Italian Pine Seeds (Pinus Pinea)

Italian pine, another name Pinia (Pinus pinea) is an evergreen coniferous tree that belongs to the Pine family and grows on the Mediterranean coast from the Iberian Peninsula to Asia Minor. Pinia is known for its nuts. Thanks to their wonderful taste, Italian pine was originally grown only in Spain and Portugal, and then began to be successfully cultivated around the world in places with a Mediterranean climate.

Italian Pinia pine can grow up to 30 m in height. Of the many species of pines currently growing throughout the globe Pinia is one of the most easily recognizable. The Italian pine has a tall, slender trunk, and the crown envelops the tree like an umbrella.

Pinia has been cultivated in Europe for about 2000 years. The lifespan of a pine tree varies depending on environment, but most often Pinia grows for about 300-500 years.

Italian pine nuts were eaten different nations for thousands of years. A well-known fact: Roman soldiers during the Roman Empire considered these nuts a delicacy and took them with them on distant campaigns. Today, Italian pine nuts are widely used in French and especially Italian cuisine. They are added to pesto sauce, confectionery and when cooking meat.

The crown of this beautiful coniferous tree is very dense, dark green in color and very compact. Needles 8-15 cm long are collected in small bunches, rather narrow and hard, all year round green. Although in some cases with different weather conditions needles may have a bluish tint. Cones most often grow singly, but are also found in groups of 2-3 pieces. Cones are spherical, rarely ovoid, about 10-15 cm long. Female cones are shiny, brown with wingless seeds, male cones are yellow, and light brown when ripe.

Italian pine prefers to grow on sandy soils with humid climate, so they can be found along the coast.

Pinia is a very beautiful coniferous tree, which is very often used for growing bonsai. Even the Etruscans grew it to decorate individual plots, and it is still cultivated for landscaping gardens and parks, as it is resistant to adverse environmental conditions. And also Pinias are able to adapt to grow on various types of soil.

Italian pine propagates by seeds, but successful germination requires stratification within 3 months. Seeds are soaked in warm water for a day, and then planted in sandy soil and removed to a cool place, or planted in open ground before winter.

Perhaps, in second place after nuts, Pinia is valued for its delicious coniferous aroma, which can kill pathogenic bacteria. Coniferous oil, extracts are obtained from needles, which are then used to treat many diseases and to prepare coniferous baths.

cost of italian pine seeds - 400 rubles / 5 pieces, 700 rubles / 10 pieces

Mexican pine seeds (pinus Strobiformis)

Pinus STROBIFORMIS or Mexican White Pine or Pinus ayacahuite - the most beautiful evergreen coniferous graceful tree of the Pine family.
The crown is conical in shape, in natural conditions it is not formed evenly. In young trees, the bark is silvery gray, smooth, acquiring deep expressive furrows with age. The needles are lush, long, soft, dense green-bluish in color with a white stripe below, giving the effect of gray hair. Mexican pine in nature can reach a height of 30, less often 40 meters, and a trunk diameter of up to 70-80 cm.
It is recommended to place it on an elevation so that the lower branches receive a sufficient amount of light. You should always choose a well-warmed place for the best growth of the tree. The only exception is excessively damp and closed areas with poor air ventilation, especially during the rainy and frost season, since such conditions are difficult for the roots. Can winter on the street, but it is necessary to protect the plant from excess moisture.

Watering: should be moderate. Do not allow excessive waterlogging - the plant may die. It tolerates drought much better than too wet soil. You can do without spraying water from a spray bottle even in summer, because pines tolerate hot and dry environments well.
Top dressing: practically does not need top dressing. Fertilizer should be applied at the peak of plant development from early spring to autumn, just before radical pruning or after transplanting.
Transplantation: should be done before the first shoots appear, while trying not to damage the tap root when pruning the roots. It is necessary to ensure that the root neck is at the level of the soil.
When grown outdoors, after filling the planting pit, the near-stem circle should first be watered abundantly, and then mulched with straw, mowed grass or peat. Mulch will help retain moisture and improve soil structure. As for pre-winter mulching, it is better to choose spruce branches or chopped bark as a material. Such mulch does not attract field mice and is able to prevent deep freezing of the soil and avoid winter and spring sunburn(more precisely, the withering of the seedling).

Reproduction: propagated by seeds. It is difficult to form plants taken from nature, since the pine has a strong tap root, which is difficult to remove without sufficient experience. Safer to grow from seed.
Temperature and dormancy: Tolerates temperatures down to -34ºС. When kept indoors, it needs a cool wintering + 0 ... + 12ºС, if it is not possible to provide such a temperature, move the pine tree closer to the window on the coldest windowsill.
Mexican pine. Sowing seeds: Seeds require stratification at t + 1-5ºС.
Soak the seeds overnight in warm water. Then for 2 hours in any stimulator. And only after that, plant the seeds to a depth of about 7 mm in a mixture of high-moor peat and humus (2: 1), and put on the lower shelf (for fruits) in the refrigerator for 3 months, covering the bowl with seeds with a film. It is necessary to monitor the soil moisture and ventilate if necessary.
Next, take it out of the refrigerator and put it in a bright place. Seeds germinate in 3 to 8 weeks.

The cost of Mexican pine seeds - 200 rubles / 5 pieces

Eldar pine seeds (pinus eldarica)

Eldar pine pinus eldarica (afghan pine) is a beautiful, relatively low coniferous tree up to 15-20 meters high with a wide, spreading crown and a trunk covered with thick (up to 20 centimeters) brownish-gray bark. The wood is fine-layered, heavy. The whole tree is very rich in resin. The needles are hard. Its length is less than that of its closest relative, the Pitsunda pine, up to 10-12 centimeters.

Seeds have good germination - 75-80 percent. Large dense cones with thick covering scales are very difficult to open, but are perfectly adapted to the adverse environmental conditions in which the tree grows. In general, looking at these pines, one involuntarily marvels at how they survive in such harsh conditions.

Trunks are usually curved, bent almost at a right angle, and often twisted. This is the result of strong winds. The crown starts low, almost at the very ground. The branches are quite thick, also strongly curved. The root system of the Eldar pine is superficial, since the trees grow on rocky ground, in places the roots are bare and, as if giant snakes, meander on the surface of the rocks, fastening individual sandstone slabs.

Withstands temperature conditions -30°С to +42°С. The soils are thin, clayey, poor in humus, and highly alkaline. On steep slopes, the soil layer is completely absent, only in some places under individual trees it accumulates in an insignificant amount. Under such conditions, this coniferous plant became salt-, drought-, cold- and heat-resistant. It successfully resists strong northwest winds, is undemanding to soils.

In this regard, the plant can be very useful when planting forests on dry mountain slopes, when creating protective plantations, and when landscaping cities and towns.

Eldar pine came to us from ancient times. It originates from the Tertiary Sarmatian pine, the fossil remains of which were found in the deposits of the Kerch Peninsula. The history of the discovery of this species is interesting. In 1880, according to the samples collected by the forester L.F. Mlokosevich, the famous botanist Y.S. Medvedev first described a pine growing in the Eldar steppe, calling it sea pine. However, a more in-depth study of the plant led him to the conclusion that it is an independent species. In 1902, this species received its current name according to the place of growth in Azerbaijan.

Under natural conditions, next to the Eldar pine, different types of juniper also grow well (multiple-fruited, heavy-smelling, red), pistachio pistachio, zhoster Pallas, Georgian honeysuckle, pomegranate, large-flowered caragana (chiliga), ephedra (ephedra), hold a tree, oriental barberry, cotoneaster. Occasionally there are also shrub jasmine, endemic eldar pear.

The weight of the nut is 5-10% less than that of the Siberian pine.

Propagated by roots, seeds, cuttings.

Crimean pine seeds (pinus Pallasiana)

Pine Pallas, or Crimean (Pinus pallasiana) - beautiful evergreen tree up to 30 m tall with a dark gray trunk and a wide spreading or umbrella-shaped (in adult trees) crown. It differs markedly from ordinary pine in its very long (up to 18-20 cm), fluffy and somewhat curved dark green needles, densely covering the shoots. The bark of the Crimean pine is not reddish-brown (as in ordinary pines), but dark gray.

The crown has a flat "layered" shape, which is very reminiscent of Italian pine - pine. The homeland of the Crimean pine is the Crimean mountains, mainly the southern slope of Yayla, and the northern part Black Sea coast Caucasus, where it is known from the slopes of the mountains south of Gelendzhik. Grows in mountains up to 1000 m above sea level, forms extensive light forests. In ancient times, the Crimean pine covered almost all the slopes and spurs of the Crimean mountains up to sea shore. Lives 500-600 years.

Prefers calcareous soils, but also grows on crushed stone and sandy soils. It is photophilous and grows well in open sunny places, when shading it is oppressed and affected by pests. Drought-resistant, does not tolerate stagnant moisture. Thanks to a powerful root system, it resists winds well. High gas resistance allows the use of Crimean pine in landscaping cities and industrial facilities.

Due to the long dark green needles and dense foliation of the crown, the Crimean pine is very decorative and can be successfully used in single and group plantings in gardens and parks on sandy, stony and calcareous soils. Crimean pine very often found in the gardens and parks of Russia.

Pine Lambert (lat. Pinus lambertiana)- commonly known as "Sugar pine" (Sugar pine), this species Pines was awarded by people with several epithets at once, starting with the word “most”. Exactly this tall tree from all the pines growing on Earth; this is the largest, massive tree with a thick trunk, again among known to people planet pines; Lambert Pine has the longest cones of all cones of coniferous trees, although they are inferior in weight to Coulter Pine (“Pinus coulteri”) cones. Inside the long buds are edible, nutritious nuts similar to our popular pine nuts. Pine Lambert is a respected species of the numerous genus Pine (lat. Pinus) of the Pine family (lat. Pinaceae), through the vessels of which sweet resin flows.

What's in your name

In the generic name of numerous coniferous trees "Pinus", according to one version of botany, they reflected the resinousness of these plants, and according to another version, the love of the tree to settle on steep rocks, demonstrating its power and high vitality. After all, the Latin word "pix" means "resin", and the Celtic word "pin" means rock, and both of these words could well be the starting point for the name of the genus.

In the specific epithet "lambertiana" ("Lambert"), a botanist originally from Scotland, David Douglas, who is the author of the name of another Pine - Heavy Pine (lat. Pinus ponderosa), immortalized the human memory of another botanist, an Englishman named Aylmer Burke Lambert (Aylmer Bourke Lambert). Peru Lambert owns a number of works that describe many types of conifers discovered by other botanists, including David Douglas.

The common name "Sugar pine" comes from the sweet resin that runs through the vessels of the tree. Native Americans use Lambert Pine resin as a sweetener for certain dishes. According to John Muir, a Scottish-American defender wildlife, sweet pine resin is preferable to maple sugar. John Muir was a big fan of the Lambert Pine, calling the tree "the king of conifers".

Description

Unfortunately, sweets are loved not only by people, but also by many insect pests. Moreover, they are not at all embarrassed by the power and strength of the plant, and therefore they calmly attack even the largest among the pines, the Sugar Pine. The officially registered Sugar Pine, at 82.05 meters tall, the second tallest registered pine tree, was attacked by bark beetles, dying in 2007 from their voracity.

The championship in height belongs to the now living tree growing in the American national park Yosemite California. The height of the tree is 83.45 meters.

The long straight branches of the Lambert Pine are covered with tufts of deciduous needles, consisting of five pieces of such needles 6 to 11 centimeters long. At the ends of the branches there are large cones, under the weight of which the branches are slightly bent to the surface of the earth.

A special feature of Pine is its large cones, the length of which varies from 25 to 50 centimeters, in exceptional cases reaching up to 66 centimeters. These are the longest cones among all conifers, but inferior in weight to those of Coulter Pine ("Pinus coulteri"). Although the length of the latter is maximum 37 centimeters, the weight of Culter Pine cones reaches 5 kg, which cannot be said about Sugar Pine cones. In any case, standing under such types of pines with an unprotected head is dangerous for human life.

Nut seeds are also quite large, up to 1.2 centimeters long. In their composition, they are similar to our home-grown nutritious pine nuts and are also eaten.
