Domestic combined guns. Single-barreled hunting rifles of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant

These models of combined guns are in many ways similar to each other and, to be more precise, they all represent in fact the same weapon, with only some differences. The MTs105 line of shotguns is represented by the widest range of different barrel sets and is a replacement for the MTs5 line.

This weapon is a model of a combined gun with vertically paired barrels. The upper barrel can be 20-gauge or 32-gauge, its length is 600 millimeters, the lower barrel is rifled caliber 5.6 mm and has a length of only 300 millimeters. Such a difference in the length of the barrels makes the weapon probably the most recognizable of the whole variety of combined guns, and even if a person does not know that such guns exist, then he can easily confuse it with a single-barreled smooth-bore gun, mistaking the lower barrel for anything, but not for the second stem.

The main distinguishing feature of this model of the combined shotgun is that it is fully self-loading. That is, the reloading of both the upper rifled barrel and the lower smooth one is carried out automatically, which brings the weapon to a new level. The barrels in the weapon are vertically paired, the upper one, as already mentioned, is rifled with a caliber of 5.6 millimeters chambered for .22LR, the lower 20-caliber chambered for a sleeve 70 millimeters long.

This model of a combined gun stands out among the variety of combined weapons primarily because it is multi-shot, and also because its rifled barrel is adapted for firing powerful enough cartridges, which cannot be said about many other models of combined weapons.

These combined guns are examples of combined weapons with a vertical arrangement of trunks, with hidden triggers. They are made piece by piece, while the weapon is not only beautiful, but also a standard in quality. It just so happened that really high-quality weapons for the civilian population are extremely rarely mass-produced in our country, this also applies to the described models.

This shotgun is a representative of high-class shotguns with a vertical arrangement of rifled and smooth barrels. This weapon was produced in small batches or individually and was mainly intended as a gift. In our time, MTs5 has replaced MTs105.

This weapon model basically differs from other ninety-fours only in the block of barrels. Firstly, the rifled barrel in it is installed on top of the smooth one, and secondly, the smooth barrel is designed for the twentieth caliber, and the rifled barrel for the caliber of 5.6 millimeters. This model was developed in 92 and has been produced since the end of 93 by Izhmash. Like other models of IZH-94 "Sever" is characterized by detachable trunks, paired in a horizontal plane.

Despite the fact that the guns of the IZH-94 line are represented by three models, two of them can be combined into one, since they have very minor differences. These combined guns are weapons with a hidden trigger and with a vertical arrangement of trunks, where the upper barrel is smooth, designed for a cartridge of 12/70 or 12/76, and the lower one is rifled, and can be designed for a variety of ammunition.

The combined shotgun IZH-15 is a model of a hunting weapon with hidden triggers, with a vertical arrangement of trunks. The upper barrel of the combined shotgun IZH-15 is smooth, sixteenth caliber, the lower rifled caliber is 5.6 mm, for hunting cartridges 5.6x39. You can also use 5.6 rimfire cartridges by inserting the rifled insert that comes with the weapon into the chamber.

This model of weapon is a single-triggered bullet-shotgun combined with a vertical arrangement of trunks. It is represented by three models at once: IZH-56-1, IZH-56-2 and IZH-56-3. The first two modifications have a smooth upper barrel, which can be either twenty-eighth caliber or 32, while the lower barrel is rifled in 5.6 mm caliber for cartridges with a rimfire primer. In IZH-56-3, the rifled barrel is located above the smooth one.

Why does a modern hunter need a combined weapon? What is its advantage and, most importantly, how useful is it in general in modern conditions?

Combined double-barreled shotguns, as a rule, have rifled and smooth barrels, which can be located in different planes: in the vertical - such a gun is called a bokbuksflint, and horizontally, then it is a buksflint.

There are also "kombinashki" with various rifled trunks. If a sufficiently powerful cartridge is used for a rifled barrel, then the lower barrel is usually made rifled, and for horizontally located trunks, the left barrel will be rifled.

The greatest successes in the production of combined weapons have been achieved abroad. Merkel, Sauer and Heym have become synonymous with the tee or combination shotgun for many.

All branded brands of combined weapons were previously produced exclusively for cartridges with a rim due to the convenience of reloading.

I'll tell you briefly about my experience of owning a combined weapon. And I'll start from afar, making a short digression into history. Not everyone remembers now, and some do not even know that there was a time when weapons were not registered with the police, but were recorded in a hunting ticket in a store, where there was a separate page for this purpose. When buying second-hand, this operation was carried out in a hunting society with the seal of the organization.

But then none of us could even think about rifled weapons, only athletes, the highest ranks of law enforcement agencies and full-time hunters of the Gospromkhoz working under a contract could have them, and even then they were given these weapons only for the time of fishing.

Our party leaders were very afraid of a man with a gun, in contrast to Comrade Lenin, who claimed that there was no need to be afraid of him. True, in order not to sin against the truth, it should be noted that in the days of Nikita Khrushchev, a small-caliber rifle could be bought at any hardware store, or ordered by mail.

Unfortunately, after his departure, this lafa ended, and until now, millions of rifles are trying to seize from the population of Russia.

But in the 90s a miracle happened, and the people were finally given the right to purchase rifled weapons (though after five years of owning a smoothbore). I was always somewhat embarrassed that eighteen-year-old beardless youths were completely calmly trusted with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and other more serious units, but after the army they were unworthy of these weapons.

Once I read on the Hansa the statement of one young hunter: “I bought a rusty single-barreled shotgun for 100 rubles. What for? I’ll lie there for five years, then I’ll buy a rifle, a nightlight and I’ll hunt.” I personally do not see anything criminal in this statement.

Many novice shooters (namely shooters) want to have rifled weapons only for sporting purposes. And disciplines that are gaining popularity, such as benchrest, varminting, longrange (now groundhogs are already shot at 1.5 km), cannot develop due to our wonderful legislation that does not allow people to buy rifled right away, so a rusty single-barreled shotgun pops up.

So, as soon as it became known about the possibility of acquiring rifled weapons, I ran to Shchepkin for permission, and after receiving it, I completely immersed myself in the process of acquiring a rifle.

But everything turned out to be not so simple. At that time, only army SKS and Mosin carbines decommissioned from military warehouses were in stores. Imagine my amazement when the best “mosinka” I found in terms of accuracy (a sighting sheet was attached) showed a bullet spread of 100 meters in 28 cm.

Nothing was attached to the SCS at all, but when examining the weapons, it was clear that the last third of their barrels was smooth due to increased daily cleaning with a metal ramrod. Paragraph!

From my MTs-6 with trench barrels from the lower barrel at 80 meters, I put two Polev bullets into a paper ruble. Why have such a rifled weapon?! I was ready to return the permit.

But Saint Tryphon helped: a friend offered me a tee for purchase. I saw such a weapon only in pictures - just a miracle! Tiny Austrian threesome, made in Ferlach, in very good condition for its age.

Brazed barrels: two upper 16x65 and lower 8x57JRS (with rim). The barrels are the thinnest, 50 cm long, and the stock is tiny. Apparently, they were made for a lady or a teenager, so the weight of this gun was less than three kilograms. There were very few cartridges, and I used them very carefully.

This caliber made it possible to shoot almost all types of ungulates, and the animals, as a rule, lay down after the first shot.

So, I never fired shots from smooth barrels in five years (in the presence of a sports MTs-6 with two pairs of barrels) and used them only to finish the wounded animals with a Polev bullet (peace be on Viktor Vladimirovich, he was a wonderful person).

Of course, I used this gun completely for other purposes, in these conditions, of course, a rifle would be more convenient.

I bought the next “combine” already quite meaningfully when the stores were filled with imports. The weapon was bought for long running hunts in the sparsely populated northern regions of the European part of Russia.

It was a new, straight from the store, CZ BRNO BO 802 shotgun in calibers 12x76/30-06. The most common caliber was chosen - as the Americans say, "from mouse to bear." With the lightest bullet of 110 grains (7.13 g), mountain partridges are shot in America, so for a black grouse it will definitely fit. The smooth trunk was planned for hazel grouse.

The trunks themselves on the “combinashka” are brazed, but here is the wood and its processing, and the general impression is like from IZH-27. What can I say - XXI century! If in the 20th century weapons were made by gunsmiths (the lodges of the pre-war Sauers are still alive), then in the 21st century they are definitely marketers. Upper smooth, lower rifled, two descents.

In my opinion, two descents are an extremely inconvenient invention. Actually, I switched to sporting guns partly due to the presence of a single trigger mechanism. And in the “kombinashki” there are models where the sequence of shots with a single trigger mechanism is regulated by the translator.

Two descents (two separate independent mechanisms) are justified, perhaps, only when firing from a choke, when it is possible to fire an instant second shot when the first one misfires while hunting a large and dangerous animal.

Until recently, in pre-war Europe, only welt cartridges were used in fractures. In my purchased CZ, I had a rifle.30-06 (with a groove).

As it turned out later on the hunt, after the shot, the ejector slipped behind the sleeve every other time, which led to the complete failure of the weapon. Here you need to either walk with a ramrod, which does not always help, or use a weapon for one shot and immediately go home. But for a gun for a very tangible price, this is somehow wrong.

So it's time to remember the proverb "Smart people learn from the mistakes of others, and stupid ones from their own." I did not take into account the world European experience and decided to apply the newfangled trends in the use of rifle cartridges in breakthrough weapons, which is why I paid the full price.

So on this instance, my communication with the combined weapon is over for now.

PHOTO BY MIKHAIL SANKOV

The next generation, I think, will either be a Blazer in calibers 20 / .222, or due to the existing international relations, which can last for a very long time, I would look for a MC with 12 / 7.62x54 barrels.

By the way, now with my .243 and .338 I have remained virtually unarmed, unless, of course, we consider self-equipment of cartridges, which was almost allowed for personal use. The price of these cartridges now ranges from 300 to 600 rubles apiece.

I would also like to say a few words about the next imperfection of the law, this time the new hunting law, which does not allow hunting grouse birds with rifled weapons. The legs of this legislation, apparently, grow from those times when we did not own these weapons in the mass.

I would like to refer to the experience of the leading northern hunting countries, such as Finland, Sweden and Norway, where hunting for large grouse birds is allowed only from a rifled one and after passing the shooting exam in each specific hunting season.

On my own behalf, I will add that, watching the shooting of familiar hunters on grouse currents from a hut, I noted a large percentage of wounded animals that flew away after the shot, and then fell 0.5-1.0 km, which could only be observed from the edge of the field, having good review.

At dusk, from their hut, the hunters could not track this circumstance, and if not for my help, they would have lost their trophies. If you shoot from a rifled one, then this is completely excluded: you either hit or missed. After the shot, everyone scatters.

I can say for myself that I consciously abandoned shooting from a smooth one about twenty years ago, because every summer on expeditions I had to hunt on spans and nesting sites (tundras of the entire Arctic Ocean, Lake Khanka, Primorye), shooting 200-300 specimens of waterfowl in month to collect samples for viruses.

And since I am still a biologist, my conscience did not allow me to throw away the spent material. Eating all this charm has led to the fact that at the sight of a duck or a goose a lump rolls up in my throat, and therefore now I shoot only grouse and only from a rifle. Why not with a shotgun?

Yes, because at least spring, even autumn hunting from a shelter allows you to get almost any amount of game, and half of them turn out to be wounded animals.

The same thing happens when hunting from the approach. Now I practice hunting only from the approach and shooting at maximum distances of 250-350 meters, which allow me to get game, if only, then in extremely small quantities.

I never take more than one black grouse or capercaillie in the spring. And I leave shotgun shooting for the stand, where I shoot thousands of rounds a year.

The tee is one of the most common combo weapon options.

So for what purposes do you need a combined weapon? I will quote one statement: “I turn to reload with broken trunks - a bull with huge horns runs calmly past me at 70 meters.

While poking cartridges, the bull ran away. If there was a Blazer R8, there would be a bull. It is clear that weapons with breaking barrels are not suitable for driven hunting, although, according to my observations, in recent years the share of owners of these devices has grown significantly. Calibers from .300s to nines.

Further hunting from the approach with shooting of a hare, fox, beaver, roe deer, gilts, large chickens using calibers .222, 5.6x50 Rem Mag, 5.6x57 R; 6x70R, 6.5x57R; 7x57 R, and smooth - no more than twenty, to lighten the weight in general.

Hunting from the approach is not a forced march. You can barely walk, sit, listen, smoke, drink some water. You leave at dawn, you come at sunset.

At such a pace, the load of weapons does not bother, but the pleasure of a surgical shot at extreme distances on the grouse family covers all the hardships of this difficult hunt. It's not the quantity that matters, but the quality.

I think that for walkers in the forest there is no better combo weapon. There are many things, but the combi is the soul. Poetry, if you will. Philosophy of one beautiful shot.

Isn't this how Russian hunting should be? Why, for example, is a carbine better than a combi? A few quick shots? Immediately the question is: do we need it? Especially in the forest?

PHOTO BY SERGEY FOKIN

In the end, I tend to think that the combination gun, which should be produced only in Europe (the Czech Republic does not belong here), is a cult item that should be treated accordingly: not tossed under the feet in a truck, but to be groomed and cherished. You need to grow up to this weapon, you need to understand that it is a dearly beloved friend on your shoulder.

Questions like "How often do you use an extra smooth pair to your combi?" (subject to availability) I dismiss immediately, since a smooth pair in a backpack is an unnecessary burden. As an alternative to just a double-barreled shotgun, it is also incomprehensible: if a person uses the latter, then he chooses it according to his requirements.

By the way, all my life (and following my example, my friends) have been shooting only from a sporting gun - I have had all the MC models. As for questions about shooting trunks, this is an exclusively national invention.

It would never occur to any German to shoot from a smooth bullet in the presence of a rifled barrel. This weapon is treated solely as a cyplauf. It's smooth for a shot.

About optics I will say unequivocally: yes! A rifled barrel without optics is a pointless purchase. It happens that on the way to the clearing, already from the forest you see the desired trophy on the opposite edge. Distance 200-300 meters. Optics allows you to hit the target with jewelry, not to spoil the trophy (in the case of a roe deer), not to deprive yourself of the aesthetics of a shot.

Maybe, of course, there are masters of shooting from an open sight, but I have not met such. Perhaps somewhere already wrote about this, but the human eye is not able to clearly see three distant objects that are on the same line. The rear sight and front sight are sharply visible, and the target is blurry, or the front sight and target are sharply visible, and the rear sight is blurry.

In both cases, there is nothing to say about aimed shooting. The fact that athletes used to shoot from an open sight, I consider it a miracle.

Combined - having a smooth and rifled barrel - the weapon provides the hunter with more opportunities to catch prey. Having it in service, you can equally effectively hunt, shooting in the air with a shot scree, or taking out a game with a rifle bullet that is strong on the wound (like a capercaillie) and does not allow a confident shot from a smooth-bore gun to reach you at a distance. One of the representatives of such “overalls” is the IZH-94 side flint, the model range of which is united under the Baikal brand.

Hunting weapon with vertically arranged trunks (bokflint).

  • One of them is smooth, the other is rifled. Its design is based on the IZH-27M smooth-bore “vertical” gun, which is a very common and popular weapon among hunters.
  • The receiver was taken from the predecessor (its front wall was reinforced - the forehead) with a trigger mechanism and a butt.
  • The distance between the strikers is preserved, only the lower one, used to pierce the primer of the rifle cartridge, is made thinner, so it is possible to change the barrel block and return to the usual smooth-bore side flint.
  • The barrels are connected by a clutch (this is a technology patented by Izhevsk gunsmiths), it is possible to adjust the point of shooting of the barrels, for which the clutch, installed in the middle, behind the forearm, is equipped with an eccentric rotary mechanism.
  • The set of sights has been changed. Instead of a ventilated rail with a front sight, a horizontally adjustable rear sight and a front sight are installed, the height of which can also be changed. There is also a dovetail rail mounted on the breech of the upper barrel.

An overview of IZH-94 Sever is shown in the video below:

Advantages and disadvantages

The combination of a smooth and rifled barrel allows you to expand the capabilities of the shooter and increase the yield of hunting.

  • In the trigger mechanism, spiral mainsprings are installed, which are more reliable than the figured lamellar ones used in TOZ. There are spoilers (interceptors) of the triggers that do not allow a shot to be fired when the block of barrels is not completely closed, falling, and hitting.
  • The smoothbore chamber has a wide countersink that allows the use of cases with a wide or narrow flange. It is long, the gun can be loaded with cartridges both rolled with an asterisk (paper or plastic sleeves) and rolled (brass sleeves).
  • The ejector, driven by a fracture of the barrel, pulls out any swollen sleeve without any problems.
  • It is possible to replace the block of barrels, putting both smooth or rifled ones of a different caliber.

Like the IZH-27M, it is possible to install interchangeable choke constrictions on a smooth barrel. These models are marked with the letter VAR on the breech and the allowable choke mark on the muzzle.

  • The weapon has a two-stage locking scheme - on a spring-loaded latch connecting the barrel block, and a forend locking the fracture hinge. For smoothbore weapons, this is quite enough. However, there are doubts that when using magnum caliber rifle cartridges, it is reliable enough. An additional heck, like TOZ BM, would definitely not hurt.
  • The cartridge ejector is more designed to extract cases with a flanged bottom flange, there may be some inconvenience when using wafer cartridges. Especially in winter or in wet weather.
  • The butt is designed for firing from smooth barrels. First, in terms of strength. For its manufacture, beech or ash is used, and in some cases even birch is possible. A walnut would be ideal. Secondly, its crest is too low for building a line of sight through a pair of rear sights - front sight, and even more so for using an optical sight on a high bracket.
  • The dovetail bracket used does not hold the optics very securely. In addition, it is not universal, like a Weaver or Picatinny rail, which has the same distance between the grooves along its entire length and is suitable for mounting any optics.

The IZH-94 side flint is difficult to use if you do not know how to load cartridges on your own, zero in weapons and achieve a tolerable coincidence of points of impact from a smooth and rifled barrel. If such a comparison is allowed, then this is a machine of the Soviet automobile industry, requiring the owner to combine specialties.

Specifications

Design

  • Combined - rifled and smooth-bore - weapons with a vertical (bokflint) arrangement of trunks. The design is based on the IZH-27M hunting rifle. The smooth barrel is chrome-plated, with a chamber of 76 mm and the possibility of installing interchangeable choke nozzles.
  • The barrels are connected by couplings, it is possible to adjust their position to obtain a single point of impact at different distances.
  • Loading when the barrel is broken, trigger mechanism with two triggers. The front trigger works with the upper barrel, and the rear trigger works with the lower barrel. The springs are twisted, for safety, spoilers (interceptors) of the triggers are installed. The fuse is automatic, triggered when the barrel unit is opened (fractured). The safety box is located behind the release lever, on the upper edge of the receiver.
  • The receiver unit is removable, replaceable with another set of calibers or type of barrels.
  • Double locking - a spring-loaded bolt-latch connecting the block of barrels and the receiver, as well as closing the fracture hinge with the forearm.
  • The stock is semi-pistol, made of solid wood. A stock with a straight comb, without pads or protrusions. It is possible to install a shock-absorbing butt plate.
  • Sights external. The rear sight has the ability to adjust horizontally. Front sight of variable height. There is a dovetail bracket for mounting optical sights.

Completion and packaging

The gun is packed in a cardboard box.

  • Standard equipment consists only of a certificate and a weapon passport.
  • Extended Supplemented with a set of interchangeable choke nozzles, a cleaning kit (ramrod, brush, wiping).

Carbine IZH-94 Taiga

Operating principle

  • To load the weapon, it is necessary to separate the receiver and the block of barrels. To do this, the lever shank on the upper edge of the pistol grip is shifted to the right until it stops. When the trunks "break" the cam mechanism of the forearm rests on the pusher of the triggers and they are cocked. The fuse at the same time blocks both sears, and its box is moved back. The ejector lever is extended when the barrel block is broken, it is located between the chambers of the lower and upper barrels.
  • The cartridges are inserted into the chamber, the cartridge case flanges rest on the ejector lever. The block of trunks rises vigorously, the latch is automatically activated, with a characteristic click. To fire a shot, you need to move the safety box up to the release lever, and then press one of the triggers. The front actuates the trigger of the upper barrel. Rear - bottom.
  • It is possible to remove the firing mechanism from the combat platoon with the breech of the barrels open. To do this, remove the cartridges, move the fuse box up (position "Fire"), then press both triggers and smoothly close the block of barrels. You should clearly hear the clicks of the triggers.
  • Adjustment of the common point of impact of the barrels (shot) is made by changing the position of the eccentric on the middle sleeve connecting the barrels. For convenience, the fore-end must be removed. The result - the distance between the points of impact from a smooth and rifled barrel is not more than 5 cm - is achieved only in a practical way, after each change in position, a control shooting is performed.

The distance of the shot is set to the one that the shooter considers convenient and most likely.

In practice, a satisfactory result - hitting almost the same point from both barrels - can be achieved without even touching the barrels. To do this, you need to experiment with a sample of gunpowder in a cartridge for a smooth barrel.

Shooting with a combi bullet from IZH-94 is shown in this video:

Disassembly

The IZH-94 gun is stored and transported disassembled, with the barrel block removed. Its disassembly is simple and does not cause difficulties for anyone.

  1. Break the block of barrels by turning the lever on the receiver to the right until it stops.
  2. Unload the weapon.
  3. Put the block of barrels in the regular combat position again.
  4. Pull the latch on the forearm and, holding it in this position, remove the forearm by pulling on the edge that is adjacent to the receiver. Do not apply excessive force during this operation.
  5. Break the trunks, remove the block hook from the receiver pin.
  6. Press the delay lever, located in the groove of the receiver, and return the latch lever from the right to the middle position.
  7. Install the forearm on the barrel block.

tuning

You can replace the dovetail bar with a Weaver or Picatinny rail, install a front sight with a fiberoptic thread.

Hunters who prefer to hunt a variety of game, from small to very, very large, often need a versatile weapon that combines the advantages of both rifled weapons and smoothbore. But do not carry two guns with you at once! Of course, you can equip cartridges with shot and bullets, but you may not have time to change the cartridge to the right one in time. Sometimes an unlucky hunter can pay for it with his life. In order to be able to shoot one of the two types of ammunition without first reloading, it is worth using combination hunting rifles, which are appreciated by hunters around the world.

Such guns have different options for combining barrels and allow you to hunt in a wide variety of areas: from the taiga to the western regions.

What kind of animal is this - a combined hunting weapon?

In short, the combination gun differs from the usual one only by the combination of a rifled and a smoothbore barrel in one gun! It happens that there are several rifled and / or smooth barrels, which allows the use of various types of ammunition, moreover, of various calibers.

As mentioned above, such guns are a godsend for the hunter. With their help, you can get different game from one approach and not experience the pangs of choice in the spirit of “oh, if I took a rifled gun / other cartridges with me, etc.”. So in one trip you can get not only some small animal, but also, for example, an elk. However, if you're hunting a specific type of game and you already have a shotgun that suits you, then there's not much point in buying combination shotguns.

Nevertheless, many hunters consider combined models to be the most rational in the conditions of the middle lane and for hunting a variety of animals. And if you also have an insert for rimfire cartridges, then the range of use of combination guns will expand even more. With the help of such liners, you can successfully shoot small game, including fur-bearing animals and birds, and damage to the prey will be minimal. Often these inserts are already included with the weapon, in other cases they can be purchased additionally.

Types of hunting weapons of the combined type

  1. « Doubles". As the name implies, one barrel of the rifle is rifled, the second is smoothbore. Such guns are also referred to as choke guns.
  2. Tri-barrel guns("tees"). By analogy with the "doubles", three-barreled guns are available in combinations of 2 rifled barrels + 1 smoothbore or 2 smoothbore + 1 rifled.
  3. Quadruple shotgun. A rather exotic category of guns, in which there are 2 barrels of different types (rifled and smoothbore). Basically, they are not used by Russian hunters.

The most common combination shotguns in Russian gun shops are "twins".

Combination gun: features

  1. Each of the barrels has its own, different from the other ballistic features. Therefore, they are equipped with different devices for aiming. For rifled trunks - optical and ring sights (as an option - a rear sight), for smooth trunks, aiming flies and slats are used.
  2. Shooting from 2 or more barrels will not work, and the sight will be oriented to the barrel to which it is better aimed. Although many options allow the combination of a smooth-bore and rifled aiming point.
  3. Despite the undoubted advantages, such guns have a number of serious drawbacks: they do not have a magazine, and they are very heavy. With ambush hunting, of course, this is not very noticeable, but when running, extra pounds put pressure on the back.

Domestic combined guns

They have long won well-deserved popularity in all parts of our vast Motherland. Basically, this universal weapon is produced at the Izhevsk plant:

  • IZH-94;
  • IZH-94 "Taiga";
  • MP-251;
  • MC105.

However, the Tula Armory also produces its own range of combined weapons:

  • TOZ-28;
  • TOZ-91;
  • TOZ-205;

Let's take a closer look at some of these models.

A wonderful weapon for a hunter, in essence - a modification of the IZH-27. According to experienced hunters, the "Sever" is an ideal weapon for forest walking hunting for small animals and other upland game.

"North" is mainly produced in the format 20/70 + 5.6X39.

Specifications:

  • Lower barrel - 20/70 and 20/76; choke 0.5 or interchangeable;
  • Upper barrel - .22LR, .22WMR, 5.6X39;
  • The length of both trunks is 60 cm;
  • Weight - 3.0-3.4 kg.

Advantages:

Flaws:

A sample of the combined IZH-94MR is a new interpretation of the concept of light and inexpensive weapons, a more modern variation of the IZH-56 "Squirrel" released half a century ago. The model is distinguished by a compact bolt box and the use of a barless receiver system. The combination of these parameters makes it possible to achieve a low weight of the weapon, which is convenient even for long trips. Thanks to the combination of calibers and the presence of bullet cartridges of 410 caliber, IZH-94MR allows you to catch a fairly wide and varied range of game: from birds and small fur-bearing animals to medium-sized ungulates.

This model is equipped with an automatic cocking mechanism, one trigger and a hammer. The IZH-94MR trigger mechanism is equipped with a barrel selector. A push-button non-automatic fuse that locks the trigger is located in the rear area of the safety bracket. The open sight is equipped with a whole, which can be adjusted horizontally, as well as a vertically adjustable front sight. It is also possible to install an optical sight on the IZH-94MR.

Hunting double-barreled shotgun IZH-94 "Express" with a vertical arrangement of trunks was developed on the basis of the IZH-27M model. This model is distinguished by a reinforced locking unit, which is specially designed for Magnums. These design features of the "Express" make it possible to fire powerful bullet ammunition. The stable accuracy of the Express model, even during intense shooting, is ensured by the barless connection of the barrel block with a free fit of the lower one. This is also facilitated by the mechanism that regulates the convergence of the midpoint of the impact of the trunks.

Shotguns IZH-94 "Express" are safe to use due to the following structural elements:

  • Automatic fuse that locks the sear only when the hammers are cocked. Due to this, the possibility of firing from open barrels is excluded.
  • The trigger interceptors act as an additional safety device. They allow you to exclude the possibility of a shot in the event of a careless failure of the triggers without pressing the triggers.

The forearm and stock of the IZH-94 Express model are made of high-quality walnut or beech wood.

Currently, the Tula Arms Plant produces the latest unique model of the double-barreled combined hunting rifle TOZ-112. This sample weighs 3 kg and has a barrel length of 635 mm. The upper rifled barrel TOZ-112 is self-loading, equipped with a replaceable magazine chambered for 5.6 mm rimfire cartridges. The lower smooth barrel is suitable for 20 gauge cartridges with a sleeve length of 70 mm.

TOZ-112 is an incredibly convenient and, most importantly, necessary combination of barrels for hunters. And given the presence of a self-loading mechanism for reloading a rifled barrel, we can safely say that not a single model of foreign production has such parameters.

Both barrels of the TOZ-112 model are combined into a single unit. This is very convenient for transporting weapons, since with the handguard removed, the receiver can be separated from this unit, and transported separately.

Due to the vertical arrangement of the barrels, the accuracy of a bullet shot is increased. This is achieved by arranging the channels of both barrels along the axis of symmetry of the gun. The chrome-plated bottom smooth barrel TOZ-112 is especially convenient for long-term or commercial hunting, as such a coating protects the weapon from corrosion even when you cannot provide proper care for the gun.

Imported combination gun

The trendsetters for universal weapons at the moment are Merkel (Merkel), Sauer (Sauer), Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) and other foreign manufacturers. These large gun companies produce not only double-barreled and triple-barreled (so-called tees) models, but also four-barreled variants.

Combined shotgun from the Czech company Ceska Zbrojovka. At the moment, it is not at all clear what state the manufacturer and the company are in as a whole, so ordering and buying a CZ 584 can be fraught with serious problems.

Happy owners who managed to purchase Czech universal weapons note a good fight, an amazing lightness of the gun, as well as a very neat (a stone in the garden of Izhmash) front sight and rear sight, which are convenient to use, which means there is no need to pick up a file and bring something to your own . The folding mechanism of the CZ 584 is extremely reliable, and even over time it will not sag. True, the liners in the barrel during transportation to Russia tend to suddenly disappear. Then the liners, of course, pop up, but already illegally. So it is recommended to buy a combined or rifled CZ weapon if the factory is still resurrected.

Shotgun Merkel

To date, in our country on sale you can find several models of combined weapons of this brand with a vertical arrangement of trunks. We are talking about Merkel SLII and SLIII. These models are based on the same base, both of them are distinguished by a light alloy balanced barrel block. The liner, which engages with the grooves of the breech block of the stem block, locks the barrels. Thanks to this design, the desired characteristics of the mass and strength of the block are achieved. In addition, the safety of using this weapon is increased, since it becomes impossible to lock the barrel and make a shot with the liner removed. Thus, you just need to hide the insert in the safe, after which the weapon can be safely hung on the wall, decorating the interior and giving it a true hunting style. Without an insert, the gun will no longer shoot, which means that for the time being it can safely play the role of a decorative item.

The Merkel carbine, like many foreign-made guns, is extremely reliable and easy to handle. The barrel block has a clutch that does not allow the barrels to “play” compressing and expanding, and for a rifled barrel, the attachment to the clutch is not so rigid, and it can “float” a little during thermal expansion. Given the lack of soldering of the blocks, the aiming point does not jump, regardless of how many shots were fired.

The barrels are adjusted not like on domestic counterparts, with inserts, but with the help of two screws with locks, which, again, is much more convenient. This allows you to save a lot of nerves when bringing the middle aiming points at a certain distance, which results in real torture on Izhmash products. Once set up correctly and the screws tightened, no further set up is required, unlike with TOZs. The locking system is also top notch. This system is rightly called one of the most reliable and durable, besides, it can be easily removed for cleaning and lubrication. The weapon is cocked only before the shot, and before it, regardless of whether a cartridge is inserted or not, Merkel is absolutely safe.

Characteristics:

  • Smooth barrel: 12/76, 20/76;
  • Rifled: .223 Rem., .308 Win., 6.5x57R, 7x57R, 7x65R;
  • Barrel length 60 cm;
  • Weight - 3.1 kg.

In general, for maximum versatility, you can choose between a 20/76 smooth barrel (because 12 gauge is overpowered for bird hunting, especially at close range, while a rifled barrel is more than enough for big game) and rifled.308 win.

Finishing, even as standard, is not inferior to Turkish in the luxury class (and everyone knows how our Middle Eastern neighbors love to decorate weapons).

Further work with the weapon depends on the tasks assigned to it. If this is shooting from a rifled barrel with a shell bullet at hazel grouse, and a semi-shell bullet at big game, then it is recommended to select ammunition with a minimum spread of ballistic characteristics at a distance of up to 300 meters (otherwise you will have to carry a notebook with you about how and when the difference in shooting begins, after all, in the head, especially at the sight of prey, it is difficult to keep this information).

A cartridge with a large shot or a light bullet of 18-22 grams is selected for a smooth barrel, so that the gun can show itself in all its glory as a double-barreled driven gun, and it does not matter which barrel is fired from - rifled or smooth.

For accurate shooting with a rifled barrel, you should “pump” the sights: you can install a sight with a magnification of 1 to 6 to achieve the most convenient aiming.

Tri-barreled weapons (tees)

At present, tees have become widespread only in German-speaking countries, where they are quite popular. The main advantage of any tee is its versatility, but this quality is fraught with certain disadvantages.

The heyday of traditional tees came at the beginning of the 20th century. These models are also called shot tees. They were equipped with two side smooth trunks, as well as one rifled, located under the first two or between them.

The popularity of tees is due to the fact that they are suitable for year-round hunting, and with their help you can get game of almost any size. Tees equipped with mechanical or collimator sights, as well as with a low-magnification optical sight, are often used for driven hunting.

A weapon in which different types of barrels are present in one product is called combined. Most often, the modification is as follows: rifled and smooth barrel. Sometimes there are two rifled barrels. They can use cartridges of different calibers.

The requests of a hunter with such weapons will be satisfied to the greatest extent. Judge for yourself: if you hunt on your own, the presence of such a gun will make it possible to get animals that differ significantly in size during one trip. Hunting objects can be different: from small fur-bearing animals to large game, such as elk. The hunter uses one of the barrels, which is needed in a particular case.

If you mostly hunt small game, this type of weapon does not make much sense. The smoothbore gun will fully satisfy your needs. Those who prefer different types of hunting and often look for more serious prey cannot do without a combined weapon.

Kinds

  1. "Twins". They have one rifled, the second smooth shot barrel. Former name - choke guns;
  2. Three-barreled ("tees"). There are the following combinations: two smooth shotguns + rifled barrel or shotgun + two rifled barrels;
  3. Quadruple guns. They have two rifled barrels and two shotguns, they have a common horizontal connection.

Doubles and tees used by hunters more often than four-barrel shotguns, which are rather exotic weapons.

Peculiarities

  • The ballistic characteristics in each of the barrels are different. For accurate shooting, there must be different sights. For a rifled barrel: ring sight, rear sight or telescopic sight. The aiming front sight and the bar are mounted on a smooth trunk;
  • The scope of a hunting rifle works better with the barrel it is aimed at. It will not work to produce simultaneous accurate shooting using a sight from both barrels;
  • The lack of a magazine and a fairly large weight are perceived by many hunters as serious shortcomings. Now they produce products with barrels, for the manufacture of which heavy-duty, but lighter steel is used. The trunk has become shorter. The quality of the battle has not deteriorated. These techniques have improved the usability of combined guns.

Russian production

Domestic guns have long been successfully used by hunters in different regions of Russia. The Izhevsk plant produces popular models of combined guns: IZH-27, IZH-27M (North), IZH-94 Taiga, IZH-94 IZH-MR221 (Artemis), Zubr, MTs-7, MTs17, MTs 105, MTs140, TOZ28, TOZ 91, TOZ 205.

Among the models are hammerless, with external triggers and intra-hammer guns. "Verikals" and "horizontals" of various calibers, double-barreled and triple-barreled guns are produced.

imported

Trendsetters and suppliers of modern modifications of the combined hunting weapons imported on the world market are firms Merkel, Sauer (Germany) Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) (Czech Republic), Beretta (Italy) and others.

They produce double-barreled and triple-barreled shotguns in which the barrels are located vertically or horizontally, as well as options with four barrels.

Shotgun IZH-94

A shotgunless double-barreled shotgun, which was "born" from the Izh-27M. Chrome-plated barrels are locked with a grenade hook and a secure locking bar. Automatic fuse. Permanent or interchangeable chokes are available in the smooth barrel.

Modifications: basic (with different calibers: 12/70, 7.62x39, 12/76, 7.62x54R), Sever, Express. The IZH-94 package is simple. The stock is made of solid walnut. Warm shade. The texture of the wood is visible.

The gun is made neatly, the quality is good. On the plane of the butt there is a rubber shock absorber. The weapon is short. Since shooting is usually carried out at a distance not exceeding 100m, there are permanent sights: a rear sight and a front sight. Allows you to fix the optical sight with a special groove, which is called the "dovetail".

Shotguns Taiga

Shotgun with two barrels brand IZH-94 "Taiga" - more advanced version IZH-27. Features of this double-barreled shotgun: chrome-plated barrel is located on top (12 gauge), the use of 7.62 caliber on a rifled barrel, which is located below. The presence of couplings that regulate alignment. Barrel length: 600mm, chambers: both 76 and 70mm.

A definite plus: you can replace the trunks with others that are more suitable for the hunter. The triggers are internal. Shot order: upper barrel, then lower barrel. "Taiga" have a good accuracy of combat and sufficient accuracy. Important: it is necessary to adjust the barrels for a certain type of ammunition. There are practically no misfires.

Hunters highly appreciate the working abilities of the Taiga. This weapon is universal, affordable, reliable and unpretentious in terms of operation. With a high-quality debugging of a gun, it satisfies all the needs of its owner.

Combined weapon Sever

The Sever combined hunting weapon has been produced in Russia since 1993. Barrel length - 600mm, cartridges 5.6x39. Differences from other modifications of IZH: a smooth chrome-plated barrel (caliber 20mm) is located at the bottom, a rifled one with a caliber of 5.6mm is at the top.

Sights are the same as for other IZH series. Couplings and interbarrel straps firmly connect the trunks to each other, so there are no problems that IZH-94 and IZH Taiga had. USM - reliable, strikers and triggers are separated. To cock the hammer, you need to "break" the gun. Due to the fact that the triggers in the event of a breakdown will not be able to hit the strikers, protection against accidental shots is guaranteed, when the gun falls, for example.

Butt perform walnut or beech wood. 3kg - this is the weight of the "North". The gun is perfectly balanced, 95mm from the stock is the center of gravity.

The double-barreled shotgun IZH-94 "North", due to its characteristics, is one of the most successful and unpretentious models of bullet-shotguns, with which you can walk on a small fur-bearing animal, and not be afraid of meeting with a larger and more aggressive opponent.

Merkel hunting combination weapon

A well-known German company produces high-quality, reliable, easy-to-use guns with horizontally and vertically twin barrels. “Verticals” are a fairly new trend in hunting fashion, but their advantages are already visible: greater recoil compensation and improved visibility.

Vertical models of Merkel guns: "Merkel 2000 and 2001". Since 2002, the Magnum chamber has been used, the length of which is 76mm. Weight: 2.8 - 3.3 kilograms.

The 2000 model is inexpensive, reliable, and easy to operate. "Choke" and "pay" - these are the standards of muzzle narrowing. Models are produced with one trigger (including without a selector) or with two triggers. If a misfire occurs in the lower barrel, you can shoot from the upper barrel without problems. The 2001 model is more expensive and has fine engraving.

For mass use in hunting farms, in forestries, cheaper, but no less reliable verticals are used: "Merkel SL III and SL II". In these "twins", in addition to reliable steel, polymers and light alloys are used.

The safety of Merkel combination shotguns is at the highest level. There will be no shot, even if the gun falls, because after “breaking” and loading the weapon, the mainsprings are not cocked.

"Horizontal" - a classic combination of weapons. Successful models "Merkel-40" and more prestigious "Merkel-60". The type of weapon is very beautiful, the textured walnut emphasizes the prestige of the brand. Titanium nitrite applied to the triggers creates the illusion of gold plating.
