Nikolai worked at the institute, and was also the chairman of the Expert Council at the Lunacharsky Musical Instruments Factory (Chapaeva Street).
The Council evaluated the instruments made to order for master performers - guitars, harps, domras, balalaikas and other strings.
Each tool could be made for several years.
(After Selitsky's death, Shitenkov Ivan Ivanovich, a professor at the conservatory, a student of Selitsky, worked there).
In 1980, Nikolai Modestovich developed nosebleeds. Diagnosis - hypertensive crisis. Age 76 years. In the next 4 years, he repeatedly lay in hospitals for the oldest communists - on Dynamo Avenue and on Primorskoye Highway. As soon as he was discharged from the hospital, he again began to work with students, although the doctors categorically forbade doing this.

In 1981, a hypertensive crisis caused ear bleeding. Further - worse.
In 1982, he was going to work and fell in the hallway. The ambulance established - a microstroke. Before the neurological team arrived, I was asked to hold Nikolai's tongue with some kind of medical instrument. I was so afraid to let out a slippery tongue that I tried my best. When Nikolai came to his senses, he asked why his tongue hurt. She did not explain, she said that she probably bit. He himself did not remember anything.
In addition to me and my son, teachers from the Chess Institute N.M. visited him in the hospital. Petrov G.A. and many others.
Regular strokes deprived Nikolai of the opportunity to speak, move, and cope with natural needs. The heart continued to work and, to a limited extent, the brain. When he saw me on the threshold of the ward, his face changed, his eyes shone. The nurses said that he did not sleep even at night, did not take his eyes off the door.
"Everything is waiting for you." I started to feed like a baby - with a spoon. Before opening his mouth, he gestured at mine - the habit of taking care of me. The food in this elite hospital was delicious, varied, but the portions were small. The old people ate little.
The medical staff, knowing that I was from work, quietly said:
"We brought you food and kefir. Take juice and fruit..."
"But what about the sick, suddenly not enough?"
“And who gets up here, who walks? Who doesn’t have enough? They are seriously ill, not walking, and some cannot eat.”
There were 6 people in the room. There was a terrible stench, the patients moaned from bedsores. Those who could talk spoke a little about themselves: the former director of a large plant, the secretary of the party committee, the chief engineer of the association, and so on.
At least tell something about yourself - maybe they will remember ...
They asked for small services: give water, wash a mug, wash a handkerchief under the tap ... And I took a rag, a bucket, covered the sick with a blanket, opened the window and started cleaning. The sick were given two diapers a day, and if no one came to take care, then the sick lay in urine and sewage.
When home sheets, pillowcases, and towels ran out, she complained to the commandant of the hostel at Lanskoye Highway 9, Sapelkin.
"Galina Efimovna, I'll help your trouble. Every Saturday, go to the watch and pick up a bale of decommissioned linen, just don't be shy, please. If the linen in this hostel runs out, we will take it on Baskovy Lane."
What a problem has fallen off the shoulders! I pushed a full bedside table of linen and asked the staff to pull the wet out from under Nikolai in one movement and put the dry one in.
"I'll do the rest of the care myself, after work."
At the department they knew about my trouble and helped in every possible way: to give a ride to the hospital in a car, to support Nikolai Modestovich while I was changing my underwear and other things. In this regard, I am very grateful to Prof. Motylev V.M., Blumenau D.I., spouses Gorevs. They offered to pick up Nikolai Modestovich from the hospital on one of the discharges and bring him home. On the Volga we reached the house. Daughter-in-law Tanya cooked dinner, cleaned the apartment, and we brought a joyful Nikolai Modestovich. Seeing the familiar surroundings, he went to the piano and began to play.
He was a good improviser and it is impossible to call what he played. He played some unfamiliar beautiful music. We all froze in amazement, stood silently, afraid to move and interrupt it, tears appeared in our eyes. The work was perfect, according to all the laws of composition, philosophical in content, perfect in technique. There was nothing recording in the house - only that emotional shock remained in the memory. It was last game Nikolai Modestovich - he no longer approached the instrument, and if he did, he could not even play a chizhik-pyzhik. Just looked at the keyboard with curiosity.
A psychiatrist from the hospital Dima Voronov came:
"Nikolai Modestovich, do I like you"
"You me too" - answers Nikolai Modestovich.
"Do you subscribe to newspapers? What is the name of the newspaper that lies on the piano?" (And there lies the Truth)
"Doctor, aren't you ashamed not to know the name of the newspaper!" And I couldn't name the newspaper.
"Nikolai Modestovich, who is now General Secretary parties?"
"Of course Stalin. You see - his portrait in the newspaper" - and all in the same vein.
If they called from the institute, he answered:
"Now I'm leaving, give the audience with the piano Dideriks and a good accompanist!"
"Nikolai Modestovich, we don't have Dideriks piano!"
"Then I'll take from home!"
We had a 1904 Dideriks cabinet grand piano with 12 medals.
----
After the first visit to the hospital, the son could not eat for several days, he was so shocked by what he saw - old age, illness, dying, dirt and stench. The nurses said that some sick children visit once a month to sign a power of attorney with the head physician to receive the old man's pension, albeit a personal one.
“We don’t have such caring relatives like you in our department,” the nurses told us.
I remember a nurse who was called "SS" behind her back. She did all the procedures silently, quickly, and it seemed rude to me. Patients didn't like her either. She shared her doubts with one woman (a judge of the Moscow region), who was caring for her seriously ill father. And the woman said that this is the best nurse, she works in the Mechnikov hospital. There are young guys and women who do not even dream of such medicines, procedures and food as in a hospital for old communists. These old people, completely hopeless, out of their minds, throw away medicines, and young people die from their absence. So she is angry with the old people, regretting that she cannot help others - who could still live and live.
-----
Caring for the sick made me forget everything. I remember, with great difficulty, I acquired a urine collection device. The patient could be left with him all night. And that day the teacher Motylev V.M. came to the hospital. - head of the department. Thinking nothing, I began to try on the device on myself - how to adapt it. At the same time, she kept an eye on Motylev. Valery Mikhailovich from embarrassment did not know what to do with his eyes. A little more, I would try on it.
------
Once I passed by an open chamber.
On the bed lies something similar to a huge boulder.
"What is it?"
"This is a patient with dropsy. She is dying and will not come out of here."
"So this is our teacher of party history - Fradkina Reveka Ilyinichna!"
"The disease does not divide people by profession," the nurse replied.
------
On April 17, Nikolai Modestovich fell into unconsciousness, but he breathed for another three days.
On April 20, 1985, my heart stopped.
He was 81 years old.
All his brothers and sisters died at the same age.
